INNOVATORS OF INCREMENTAL BOX JACKING TECHNIQUES
With increasing necessity of vehicular and pedestrian movement leads towards continuous improvement of road and rail infrastructure. The improvement of road and rail networks lends itself to another issue, the management of the intersection between the two networks.
There are two possible solutions to this issue:
RAIL CROSSINGS OR GRADE SEPARATION
Where Grade Separation is prevalent overpasses allow for simultaneous traffic of cars and trains. Often large and expensive structures are required to achieve this that can be difficult to achieve in already congested areas and causes major disruption to movement of traffic during construction phases.
Where Underpasses are prevalent this will also allow for simultaneous traffic of cars and trains but are often smaller than overpasses and easier to construct in congested areas with lower global environmental impact.
The new patent protected Petrucco Technology will allow the Contractor to build underpasses beneath live railway lines whilst minimising the interference between site and rail traffic thus keeping the movement of trains free flowing during the construction sequence. This philosophy can also be adopted roads.
The concept is to build a reinforced concrete structure (box) to the side of the railway in order to mitigate any interference with the movement of trains during construction period.
On completion the box is launched using a series of advanced hydraulic jacks and steel spacers resting against a purposely constructed reinforced concrete "launch slab"
During the jacking operations excavating to the front face of the box creates the room to allow the box to advance without pushing the soil, which is important to stability.
To support this operation a provisional (temporary) bridge is built by excavating the ballast from under and between the rail sleepers. The "temporary bridge" is installed on site without the necessity of modifying the rails by inserting transverse beams placed beneath the rails and supported by reinforced concrete footings specifically designed for each application - no two sites are the same.
By isolating the rails from the box jacking activities allows the free movement of trains thus avoiding passengers to continue their journey by bus.
